espen- I'm not sure, it was in the ref, but you're right i don't remember it in the show, yet. i figured it looked good in the composition so i'd include it regardless.
Well, as a friend of mine said after I commented the pipe - he said that it maybe fitted his "thinking-face" better than a cigarette. He may have a point there, along with yours about fitting the composition ;) Don't worry, art is about creating something reality cannot, so why not include or exclude things that's different? :)
Love these three! Your blog is very inspirational, I don't anyone who's constantly improving as much as you.
Have to ask you about one thing I' struggling with. Do you make your palettes from scratch, or pick colors from your refs? I pick them, and feel a bit like a cheater. :/
espen- good point. The thinking man always holds a pipe :D
teemu- Thank you! it really depends. sometimes i color pick an entire a piece, sometimes just a little to get my bearings, or not at all. i find my colors are a lot more vibrant and interesting when i make them myself, makes it easier to apply a little artistic license.

Nice one as usual, Will!
But may I ask you a question - I can't remember him smoking a pipe in The Pacific. Where did that come from?
Thanks guys!

Hey, what do you know - in episode 9 of The Pacific, Sledge is smoking a pipe numerous of times.
So I guess this isn't inaccurate at all! :D

my whole family jumped up and we shouted " hey look, a pipe" when we saw he was smoking one.
Hahaha, good quality time with the family, then? :)
