Last post of the year.

Well, it took me longer than i would have hoped, but I'm finally back to posting more art. i quite thoroughly lost my motivation there for a while and i'm afraid i don't have it back completely. I'm not really all that excited about this quick painting, but i felt i needed to get something done or else i'd never get back on the horse.

As for this being my last post of the year, i suppose i deserved a little break, this being my 174th one of 2009. rest assured there will be plenty more in 2010.

happy new year everyone!

Seiler

A quick one done for the latest Chiustream contest, It's Jason Seiler, caricature artist extraordinaire. It Seemed everyone and their brother was drawing him, saw there was a contest, figured I'd give it a shot as well. Whoever wins, gets an original caricature by Jason. I suppose it's a great way of getting a bunch of free caricatures. I've also included a little shot of my process as well.

That didn't go so well...

So, i had the idea to finish off my sketch of Marisa miller that i posted a while back. I've been working on it off and on ever since, i just wasn't feeling it on this piece, i managed to suck all the exaggeration out of her face, I became way too dependent on the eyedropper tool, really struggled with the hair, and totally gave up on the swimsuit pattern and copy/pasted it. A great example of rushing into a project without having a clear idea of what i wanted to do.

While the final product is passable, this painting was a total disaster and i'm actually just glad to be done with it.

Tony Montana

Seems crazy to think i Hadn't seen 'Scarface' in it's entirety until last night, and i consider myself a film buff. Of course, nowadays it's terribly dated, especially the awful 80's soundtrack and rip-roaringly hilarious montage. Not to mention, i always get a kick out of the giant lifts Pacino has on his shoes in movies cause he's such a shorty. Despite this, it's still a very Entertaining movie. I'm sure all my brothers in the hip-hop community will agree, they can't seem get enough of this movie! Why not? It's a great life to lead... that is until you're full of coke and swimming in your own blood.

Anyway, here's a sketch i did up tonight. hope you dig it.

Edit: added a finished version.

Sebastian Kruger Sketch

Here's a new one for this month's caricature jam over at drawingboard.org, It's Portrait artist extraordinaire,Sebastian Kruger, Arguably the best of the best when it comes to caricatures and pop portraits. You'd be hard pressed to find a single caricature artist who doesn't know this guy's Name and his art. I know that he's absolutely one of the names that comes to mind when i think of who has influenced my art.

If you haven't seen his Work before you can check it out here, or see some of his more recent work at the Kruger News blog

My first oil painting

I really never get around to doing any real paintings, and often don't have the motivation to get one done. A while back, my sister asked me to do a painting for her, but i kept putting it off. Last weekend, i decided i'd finally get it done, i chose to do a caricature of her and her boyfriend, and for the hell of it, i chose to do it in oils, a medium i have never tried.

I'm pretty proud of how solid a final product i ended up with, considering this is my third painting in as many years. however, i'm still not 100 percent happy with it. i've never been a very patient artist, and that really comes out in traditional mediums. it's a little rough and the colors are all over the place. After a week of trying different things This is what i feel is the best i can do. And after this practice, I'm really looking forward to doing some more traditional paintings and honing my technique.

anyway, here's the painting, and some of my process.

for the sake of posting something...

...here's some celeb sketches from recently.
I'm currently working on a gift caricature for my sister, and as a traditional painting, it's taking up most of my time, so i don't have much time for any other stuff at the moment.

i'll be sure to post it when i'm done.

Kristen Stewart is hot.

Almost hot enough to make me consider going to see that stupid vampire movie. Then again, Megan fox couldn't even get me to go see Tansformers 2.

A sketch from this morning.

Homme (wip)

a quick sketch of Queens of the stone age front man, Josh Homme.

i'm a bit restless tonight and really needed to get some art done. I'm slowly but surely making my way through my favorite musicians/bands, and thought Homme would be a good subject to give a try.

hope ya dig.

edit, added a second sketch
edit, spent some time to get the lighting right and zeroed in on the likeness with the first sketch.

Bear, Take 2

I suppose it's pretty obvious i'm out of new ideas or inspiration at the moment. So. here's another revisit, this time to Bear grylls, of whom i never drew a caricature i was satisfied with.

decided to work up one of the more promising sketches, still pretty rough, but it was just done to warm up, sort of color by numbers with my own lines.

Duchovny

So, a new season of "Californication" just started, we happen to have a free year of showtime at my house, and i have nothing else to watch, except for their other series "Dexter" that is. Just started watching the previous season on demand today. really digging it, thought i'd sketch up the show's star, seeing as he's got a pretty good face for caricature. Trying to sketch something, anything everyday, so here's one of those that's good enough to show.
